As the first growth factor in the world to obtain the premier eco-label, the ACT Label highlights Future Fields’ dedication to producing sustainable recombinant proteins.
EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada (June 7, 2023) – Future Fields, a pioneering biotechnology company that has built the world’s first synthetic biology system to use fruit flies, is thrilled to announce that its serum-free growth factors have achieved the esteemed ACT Environmental Impact Factor Label from My Green Lab, a nonprofit organisation with the mission to build a global culture of sustainability in science. As the first growth factor in the world to obtain the premier eco-label, the ACT Label highlights Future Fields’ dedication to producing sustainable recombinant proteins.
Future Fields’ growth factors are produced using innovative fly biotechnology methods, which offer a sustainable and scalable alternative to traditional growth factor production. By harnessing the power of flies, Future Fields can produce growth factors more efficiently and with a reduced ecological footprint compared to conventional methods. Future Fields’ EntoEngine™ platform enables the company to meet the increasing demand for recombinant proteins while addressing environmental concerns.
“We are thrilled to have received the ACT Label for our growth factors,” said Matt Anderson-Baron, co-founder and CEO of Future Fields. “At Future Fields, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. This achievement reaffirms our commitment to delivering high-quality products while minimizing our environmental impact and contributing to a more sustainable future.”
The ACT Environmental Impact Factor Label was designed to address the need of both scientists and procurement specialists for clear, third-party verified information about the environmental impact of laboratory products. By emphasising Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency (ACT) around manufacturing, energy and water use, packaging, and end-of-life, ACT makes it easy for scientists and other biotechnology professionals to choose more sustainable laboratory products. There are over 1,150 products and 2,900 labels in the ACT Database, with more on the way.
“It’s exciting to see these first ACT labels from a young innovative company in Future Fields. The ACT scores demonstrate that by rethinking the product manufacturing and use from end-to-end, the environmental impact can be significantly reduced compared to traditional approaches with growth media. It has been a pleasure to work with Future Fields and their proactive sustainability-focused approach,” says Raj Patey, Business Development Director, My Green Lab.
In addition to the ACT Label certification, Future Fields is actively engaged in various sustainability initiatives. The company contributes 1% of its revenue to 1% for the Planet, a global movement that supports environmental nonprofits. Future Fields also conducts internal analyses and sets sustainability targets through its participation in the United Nations Global Compact. Furthermore, the company has established recycling programs with local partners to reduce waste and promote circular economy practices. As of March 2023, Future Fields’ lab was awarded the highest level of certification (Green) through the My Green Lab Certification program for its efforts across 14 lab sustainability topics including energy, water, waste, chemistry/materials, and engagement.
