MULTICLONALS are recombinant secondary antibodies developed by AdipoGen’s innovative partner Abcalis. They consist of defined mixtures of carefully selected individual recombinant monoclonal antibodies, recognising different epitopes on all four different subclasses of human IgG. Their respective epitope binding sites do not compete with each other, therefore amplifying signal strengths. Multiclonals are an ideal solution for secondary antibody applications where a polyclonal antibody would traditionally be used, and are able to provide the specificity and reproducibility only available from a recombinant antibody, making them an ideal alternative for diagnostic and research applications.
Benefits of Multiclonals
- Sequence-Defined & Long-Term Availability: Multiclonals are completely sequence-defined. Each recombinant monoclonal antibody included in the mix is developed from a defined set of genes that encode the antibodies with the desired characteristics. This ensures consistency between batches, giving your work the long-term reproducibility of test results it deserves.
- High Target-Specificity: Their composition of individually characterised antibodies minimises cross-reactivity with other targets since they do not contain non-target-directed IgG as all animal-derived polyclonals do. This allows for a much lower unspecific binding-reactivity in many assays compared to animal-based products.
- A Robust Replacement: Because recombinant Multiclonal antibodies bind to multiple epitopes on the same target protein, they provide excellent sensitivity.
- Animal-Free: Multiclonal antibodies are made entirely in vitro by recombinant methods and are therefore animal-free. All Multiclonal antibodies are highly purified by Protein A and are free of animal-derived components like IgG or serum contaminations typically found in conventional antisera, as their production is done in defined media free of such components.
Say NO to polyclonal 2nd antisera disadvantages such as limited batch sizes, batch-to-batch variations, no long-term reproducibility, undefined composition, and unknown constituents.

Features and Validation of Multiclonals:
Human IgG Detection in Serum Samples (Immobilised Capture)
MULTICLONAL human anti-IgG antibodies show no limitations due to single epitope detection in terms of sensitivity for Monoclonals or unspecific binding of Polyclonals. Every antibody in the MULTICLONAL mix is specific to the antigen.
Improved Sensitivity
MULTICLONAL anti-human IgG-HRP shows comparable binding and higher dynamic range compared to typical animal-based secondary antibodies when used in quantitative immunodetection with the automated Protein Simple Western Immunoassay system.
Low Cross-Reactivity – High Specificity & Low Background
The presence of immunoglobulins with unknown specificities can lead to unwanted reactivity in animal sera. MULTICLONALs reveal a considerably lower cross-reactivity compared to animal-derived 2nd antibodies in ELISA and are a preferred solution in assays where high specificity and low background are required.
High-Specificity in Flow Cytometry
Cell lines express >1000 proteins on their surface, making specificity testing of antibodies on cells highly conclusive. EGFR-positive EXPI cells were stained with Cetuximab hIgG1 antibody against EGFR and detected with anti-human MULTICLONAL, showing a highly specific result, as shown by the complete absence of background staining on Cetuximab unstained cells.
Multiple Epitope Recognition
MULTICLONAL anti-human IgG antibodies consist of carefully adjusted antibody mixtures able to recognise different epitopes on all four different subclasses of human IgG. This provides the classical multi-epitope recognition pattern which is typical for polyclonal antisera.
No Species Cross-Reactivity
MULTICLONALs have a predesigned cross-reactivity profile and show specific binding to human IgG. Each individual antibody of the MULTICLONAL mix is selected for its absence of cross-reactivity towards immunoglobulins of other species during phage display panning on antigens.
Stability
Unlabeled MULTICLONALs can be stored for several months at 4°C without risk of harming their binding activity. Each antibody of the MULTICLONAL mix has been selected for high stability and long shelf life and has been tested in stress tests to tolerate 45°C, freeze-drying process-induced stress and >25 freeze/thaw cycles.
Purity
Every antibody of the MULTICLONAL mix is individually tested in coomassie brilliant blue-stained SDS-PAGE and size exclusion chromatography to exclude the presence of impurities and aggregate formation. Molecular weight distribution is assessed after long-term storage and protein stability stress tests. The MULTICLONAL mix antibodies remain monomeric and stable over time despite thermal and physical acute stresses.
