Small molecules are chemical compounds with a molecular weight lower than 1000 Daltons (Da). Due to their small size, these molecules lack immunogenicity and cannot trigger an immune response within an animal. This makes them difficult to quantify by conventional immunodetection methods. However, the development of molecule-coupling technology enables small molecules to undergo binding to a larger protein or peptide. This modification enables the small molecule to become immunogenic. An antibody specific to that molecule is then obtained, thereby allowing detection and quantification of the small molecule.
Due to the unique chemical structure of small molecules, they generally have no more than one epitope, which means the double antibody sandwich method is not suitable for small molecule detection. Therefore, Cloud-Clone has used the competitive inhibition method to establish small molecule-specific ELISA kits.
